Condensation of cometary silicate dust using an induction thermal plasma system

Glass with embedded metal and sulfides (GEMS) is a major component of chondritic porous interplanetary dust particles. Although GEMS one the most primitive components in Solar System, its formation process conditions have not been constrained. We performed condensation experiments gases system Mg-Si-O (MgSiO3 composition) S-free CI composition (Si-Mg-Fe-Na-Al-Ca-Ni-O system) induction thermal plasma equipment. Amorphous Mg-silicate particles condensed system, their grain size distribution depended on experimental (mainly partial pressure SiO). In experiments, irregularly shaped amorphous silicate less than few hundred nanometers multiple Fe-Ni nanoparticles ~<20 nm were successfully synthesized. These characteristics are very similar to those GEMS, except for presence FeSi instead sulfide grains. propose that grains smaller tens metallic cores, followed by coagulation, could be precursor material forms prior sulfidation.
